DEmystifying the Psoas
The psoas is a unique group of muscles key to our physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing.
Physically it joins our top half to our bottom half and plays important roles in our breathing, sitting, walking and movement generally. Unfortunately, our sedentary lifestyle tightens the psoas causing problems such as lower back pain.
Emotionally its our fight or flight muscle. If we sense that we are in danger our instinct is to curl up so we protect our vital organs – it’s the psoas that curls us up. This activates our sympathetic (“fight or flight “) nervous system which produces stress hormones, quickens our heart rate and makes our breathing shallow putting us into a state of stress. This leaves us at more risk of heart attacks and other serious medical conditions.
Spiritually the psoas spans the lower 3 chakras – muladhara, svadisthana and manipura. Chakras connected to our grounding, basic needs digestion and fire / energy
In this workshop we shall be looking at yoga exercises to tone and relax the psoas to improve our wellbeing. We shall look at both a physical – asana – practice and other yogic techniques.
