About Helen Georghiou – Mindfulness Yoga, Pregnancy and Postnatal
Mindfulness Yoga
Mindfulness is defined as the capacity of intentionally bringing one's attention to the internal and external experiences occurring in the present moment. It can be defined as the ability to observe things as they are: without choosing, without comparing and judging, without evaluating and without subtracting from or adding anything to what is happening.
In my yoga class, I invite my students to focus on their breathing throughout their practice and to use that breath as their anchor when the mind starts wandering off. I remind them again and again, to ensure that they are staying in the present moment, listening to their bodies and paying attention to what is happening on their mat.
I like to change my practice each week so students are able to experience a variety of different postures and sequences and don't get used to doing the same old thing. I believe it's important to challenge my students and encourage them to discover new boundaries. However, equally important is good alignment and each student works to their own ability. My voice is just a guide.
The majority of postures in yoga can be adapted to an individual's needs, so do not be put off if you are new to yoga or are working with an injury. There are always ways round the issue.
I always like to end the class with a seated meditation practice - a time to sit in stillness and silence, observing whatever arises.
Pregnancy Yoga Class
Yoga has been proven to be very beneficial to women during pregnancy, labour and beyond, creating a feeling of well-being and confidence in body and mind.
Pregnancy yoga can teach expectant mothers to trust her body and learn to let go of her fears and guide her towards a happy and healthy pregnancy and labour. When a woman learns to slow down her mind and tune into her body she is better equipped to make the right decisions during childbirth.
What I try and convey to my pregnant women:
- To strengthen her body
- To soften her body
- To be confident in her own body
- To become more sensitive to her body, mind and heart
- To make clear and educated decisions
- To trust her body
- To be in control of letting go
- To look forward to giving birth
- To understand it is not about natural birthing, it is about conscious birthing
- Post Natal/Baby Yoga Class
- For mums and their new babies. From 6 weeks-12 months.
It is a class for mums to get back into shape, focusing a lot on problem areas like tense neck and shoulders and strengthening the core, working the pelvic floor muscles and abdominals.
Singing songs with the babies.
It is a fun class and a great opportunity to meet new mums.

I first came across Helen’s yoga practise when I was about 12 weeks pregnant. I had had two previous pregnancies – both very tricky and both of which ended up in emergency C-sections. This time round I wanted to do everything I could do make things go a little more smoothly. I hadn’t done much yoga before but this didn’t matter. Helen’s teaching made me feel immediately comfortable and relaxed. Her lesson became something that I looked forward to every week. It made me feel more supple (despite my growing size!), more in tune with my body and my baby… Read more »
Have been attending Helen’s pregnancy yoga class since the beginning of my 2nd pregnancy and have found it invaluable. I always feel much more relaxed and flexible after the class, and it is brilliant to have some time to focus on the present moment. Helen is a fantastic yoga teacher, her classes are very welcoming and focused. I would highly recommend this class to expectant mothers!
I discovered Helen’s class via the Bushwood Area Residents Association. Having not done any yoga for many years, I was quite nervous about getting back into it, but I needn’t have been. The class is very welcoming and Helen’s style is very calm and relaxed with no pressure to keep up with your neighbour. The focus on the breath and the freeing of your mind from everyday clutter was particularly helpful for me and each time I come away feeling energised and uplifted. A great class.
my experience in Helen’s class :-
-I feel mentally relaxed when I leave the class
-I feel my flexibility is improving (I’ve noticed the difference since I first started)
– It helps me to focus my mind on the now (this has never been easy for me)
– I like Helen’s guidance to breathing & movements that I feel are delivered without feeling pressured but with encouragement to challenge myself.
– I find Helen’s classes are a benefit on my overall body strength as well as a psychological benefit.
-really enjoyable class
It is my very first time I am going to yoga classes and Helen makes this new experience great.
she is an amazing teacher. even though its a group class, she always guides each person to achieve the right position.she is very calm and encouraging. I would definitely recommend her classes.
I have been going to Helen’s yoga classes for about a year now and I can’t speak highly enough of her as a teacher or the benefits the class has brought me. I feel that my physical strength and flexibility have improved enormously over the year but by far the most significant benefit has been to my mental state. I didn’t know much about mindfulness before I began and that wasn’t my main motivation for coming to the class. However, I’ve found it incredibly useful. Odd snippets of what Helen says during the relaxation part of the class come back… Read more »
I love Helen’s Tuesday evening class at the Quaker Meeting House, Wanstead. You will be assured of a very warm welcome by Helen. She has a natural ability to guide you effortlessly and professionally through the class content. Expect asana (postures), pranayama (breath control) and meditation. Helen also indulges the class with a beautiful short piece of contemplative prose at the end of the 75 minutes. Don’t delay. You won’t regret it.
I have been going to Helen’s classes for 2 and a half years and I have found them really great and very beneficial (both physically and mentally). Helen focuses on mindfulness and I always leave feeling very calm and uplifted. I can’t recommend them highly enough! The classes have helped me deal with a couple of big transitions in my life and I am so inspired by what Helen has taught me I am currently training as a yoga teacher myself.
I started Helen’s yoga class about halfway through my pregnancy and it’s been thoroughly beneficial. I feel calmer and more able to move about after classes. Helen is kind, reassuring and adapts her teaching to those in the class. I’m looking forward to returning to post-natal yoga soon.
I am really glad I found Helen’s classes during my second pregnancy. Helen is a fantastic teacher, and offers a bit of a workout and some birth preparation in an absolutely beautiful setting. In the postnatal classes she works with a colleague to provide something for both mums and babies, with adaptations for everyone – the most relaxing hour of my postnatal week!
I’ve been going to Helen for a couple of years having looked for a teacher to replace a much loved teacher who’d retired. Helen’s practice is clear, calm, and direct. She will adjust or highlight changes where needed. The class I go to has no distracting background music, which I love as quiet benefits the practice, for me. I am stretched and strengthened and brought inward. I recommend Helen.
I’ve been attending Helen’s classes for almost 5 years, returning to yoga after a 30 year gap. I’m so glad I found Helen’s classes. Helen is fantastic at guiding everyone in the class, providing modifications for those of differing abilities. She’s also great at describing minor adjustments that can make all the difference. I’ve really noticed the gradual improvement in my flexibility over the years and the middle-age stiffness that had been setting in has gone. I always feel energised and uplifted after each class and would really recommend them.
I have attended Helen’s yoga classes since 2013, including her pregnancy and postnatal yoga classes which have helped me strengthenmy body. Helen is welcoming and adaptive in her style of teaching with clear instructions, encouragement and adjustments as required. She encourages me to approach each posture as though you are doing it for the first time and this helps me stay present throughout the class. I love her classes and look forward to every class.
Helen’s pregnancy class has been such a great find for me. I managed to keep up with a regular yoga class (with adaptations) until the third trimester, when it became clear I needed a pregnancy-specific class. Helen’s class has been really helpful for keeping back pain and other pregnancy aches at bay. She has a calm and friendly approach, and I always look forward to her class!
